Millennial movements are characterized by their nature and perception of time, and the ways in which these groups confront inevitable disappointment and then return to “normal” time. This is the theme for the book Apocalyptic Time . The volume consists of revised essays based on presentations made at an international conference devoted to that theme. Authors adopt a number of disciplinary approaches to the topic, analyzing millennial movements from the three Abrahamic faiths, as well as from the East. This book will be of particular interest to students of millennial movements, who wish to benefit from the comprehensive and comparative view it gives of the phenomenon, based on a wide variety of cases. This work greatly contributes to the theory of millennialism, by supplying specific data and theoretical reflection.

"Eschatology is the foundation for exploring Edward Schillebeeckx's work. Daniel Minch provides an in-depth analysis of his hermeneutical theology, informed by access to original texts previously unavailable in English. He examines the historical and doctrinal origins of his methodology, hermeneutics as human experience, and the continuing relevance of the approach for today's socio-economic context. Today, economics drives our predictions for the future. But Minch shows that Schillebeeckx's work reminds us of a 'new image of humanity', as well as a 'new image of God', part of the Catholic shift to a future-oriented 'theology of hope' that took place after the Second Vatican Council. These resist both economic logic and fundamentalist views of God and history that have become pervasive in popular notions of Christianity."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are engaged not in a 'clash of civilizations' but in a sectarian conflict among branches of a single civilization traditionally steeped in apocalyptic imagery and beliefs. Apocalypticism is a religious luxury that modern civilizations can no longer afford. Many would agree that the propagandists of the Christian Right have raised apocalyptic tensions to a dangerous level since 9/11, but in this book Fenn takes on the main line church leaders for their role in promoting an apocalyptic view of history.

How may a 17th century theory about the Fifth Empire and the succession of empires be so similar to the 2nd century BCE theory introduced by the Book of Daniel? How was this possible in the works of António Vieira, S.J., (1608-1697), and particularly in his famous manuscript, the Clavis Prophetarum - De Regno Christi In Terris Consummato ? This book analyzes the history of the interpretation of concepts such as Fifth Empire and succession of ages from as early as the 2nd century B.C. until the 17th century. Influenced by the main intellectual and religious tendencies of the 17th century, Vieira’s interpretation has revealed itself to be original in the way that it introduces a new reading/interpretation of the succession of historical periods. The Jesuit also identifies the antichrist and the Last Emperor with historical characters of his time.
